Welcome to our blog!

Welcome to the SHEAF Blog.

Despite our best intentions, we're not great at keeping this blog updated with our latest happenings. We are, however, definitely an active group, meeting at least once each week during term time.

If you'd like to make contact with Dunedin home educators, our contact details are in the column, below right.

We send out a weekly email newsletter with details of upcoming events, courses, gatherings etc.

You can also find us on Facebook (page is visible whether you're a facebook user or not)
http://www.facebook.com/SHEAFDunedin

Have a look through this blog to see the types of events we have organised in the past. You'll also find links to other blogs and articles that we find useful or informative, on the off-chance that you'll appreciate them too :~) (Look for these more general blog-posts under the label "Weekend Reading")

If you're not currently on our email list and would like to contact us, please email us at the address you can see in the column on the right. We'd love to hear from you!

Term 4 dates

Kathrin has almost filled up our Wednesday afternoons for Term 4 (see next week's newsletter for updates), but if you have anything you'd like to organise, please let her know (and maybe email me as well, as she's still having a few email issues).

Also, don't forget to email Michelle if you'd like to book for any of the museum trips next term - details in Diary Dates section.

This week's meet-ups

Hi everyone

First this week, a reminder we are meeting at the Edgar centre this Wednesday, from 12.30 - 3.00. Bring bikes, balls, racquets etc. There is a door fee of $2.50 per participating child. Also, remember there will be no Wednesday meet-up next week, with so many members away on the ski trip.

SHEAF Diary Dates - 18 Oct 2010

Term 4 activities

We had some great suggestions for our Wednesday activities this term, including a few short hikes, the Flower Power workshop at the Botanic Gardens and possibly even some canoeing, along with our usual park meet-ups and Intriguing Dunedin Street Walks. We'll keep you posted once all the dates have been worked out.

Nicola has also tentatively scheduled another Big Peoples' Night Out for Tuesday 23 November. Things seem to get pretty busy at the end of the year, so that will probably be our last one for 2010, unless anyone is desperate for more :-) If you plan on coming, please let her know if you'd like to make this an end-of-year dinner somewhere (and any suggestions), or if we should just stick to Nova. Also, let her know if this date doesn't work for you, and we can try to arrange something that suits all those interested.

THIS WEEK

2:00pm, Wednesday 8 September: Intriguing Dunedin Street Walk, green book 3, walk 1. Meet on The Esplanade, St Clair. Note the change of time - please email NIcola if you plan to come on this walk so that I can confirm the time with you.

Kate Jenkins is trying to organise a trip to the Otago Settlers Museum this Wednesday morning - if it is confirmed, it might be best for our walk to be scheduled a bit later than normal, for people who want to do both activities. The walk is quite flat, and should only take 1.5 hours, so I think 2pm might work out - let Nicola know if you want to come and that time doesn't work for you!

Diary Dates

I've just added a few dates to the section at the end of this list, to fill our Wednesdays till the end of term. Once again, I'm waiting on confirmation from the Edgar Centre, but everything else is straightforward. The Intriguing Dunedin Street Walk scheduled for Sept 8 is apparently a very gentle stroll around St Clair - almost completely flat, and only about 1.5 hours, so we should be able to squeeze in a play at the park as well.

I've also added two more Big People's Night Out dates for this term, one on a Tuesday and one on a Thursday. Hopefully this will mean anyone who can't make a Wednesday evening might be able to join us for some coffee and cake (or banana crème brûlée, pear crumble, rhubarb cheesecake...).

every Monday during term time, 11:00 - 12:00pm: Swimsation lessons; 12:00pm on: lunch and socialising. If you are interested in joining the lessons, contact Swimsation at Moana Pool to book. Otherwise, just turn up!

Diary Dates - 5 July 2010

We had a lovely bonfire on Waikouaiti Beach yesterday, and the kids had great fun roasting sausages, toasting marshmallows, digging tunnels, cuddling pet rats, and running up and down the beach, playing hide and seek in the pitch-black night like mad things! As usual, they were immune to the cold, and the fire kept the wimpy, old adults quite cosy, too. Thanks very much to Annemieke for organising the bonfire, and we look forward to another one soon :-)

There’s nothing scheduled this week for our Wednesday meet-up, but if anyone’s interested in tennis or indoor bowls, there will probably be a good number of SHEAF families at both activities this Tuesday.

For more information about Term 3's events, see this blog post :)

Term 3 Wednesdays - comments and suggestions?

Term 3 is rapidly approaching, but the details of our Wednesday meet-ups are not completely sorted yet!

There will be a museum workshop on the first Wednesday of term 3, then Palin has suggested that everyone brings marbles to our next meet-up for a huge game. Kathrin is looking at booking a court at the Edgar Centre for this. We've met there before, and they were really open to kids bringing bikes and scooters, as well as playing tennis or basketball, or pretty much anything. There was a charge of $2 per child, which will probably be the same this year - we'll confirm these details once Kathrin has heard back.

Someone also suggested a games day, so Claire has kindly offered her home for us to meet in for the third Wednesday of term. Bring your lunch and any board games that you and your children would like to play. Email Claire if you're coming.

We'll do another walk from the Intriguing Dunedin Street Walks series - this time it will be Walk 5 from Book 2 (the final walk in the blue book). These can be bought from various bookshops or borrowed from the library, or Nicola can scan the walk if anyone would like to have it emailed to them, as they are quite interesting to read through before actually walking them. This walk is supposed to take about 2 hours (so that's 3 for us), and will be quite hilly in parts so be warned! It also travels along part of Leith Valley Rd, to Nichols Creek - we think this is a 100km no-footpath zone, so be doubly warned!! Or we might just skip that section, in the interests of preserving lives....

There are a few other things scheduled, but we still have 25 August, 8, 15 and 22 September free, so if you have any ideas, please let Nicola know and she'll book them in. Otherwise, it will be more of the autocratic same - parks and walks!
