Welcome to our blog!

Welcome to the SHEAF Blog.

Despite our best intentions, we're not great at keeping this blog updated with our latest happenings. We are, however, definitely an active group, meeting at least once each week during term time.

If you'd like to make contact with Dunedin home educators, our contact details are in the column, below right.

We send out a weekly email newsletter with details of upcoming events, courses, gatherings etc.

You can also find us on Facebook (page is visible whether you're a facebook user or not)
http://www.facebook.com/SHEAFDunedin

Have a look through this blog to see the types of events we have organised in the past. You'll also find links to other blogs and articles that we find useful or informative, on the off-chance that you'll appreciate them too :~) (Look for these more general blog-posts under the label "Weekend Reading")

If you're not currently on our email list and would like to contact us, please email us at the address you can see in the column on the right. We'd love to hear from you!

Observatory trip - more info

More info about the observatory trip:

Apparently the observatory have learnt through bitter experience that it is best not to set a raindate, but rather to go regardless of the weather, as there is always something for them to talk about and show us - so there will be no cancellation or postponement. If the weather is no good for star-viewing, everyone is given a voucher so that they can come back for free on a better day. There's also been a change in prices - it is now $5 per adult and $3 per child (they no longer have a family price). I hope this doesn't make it unaffordable for anyone!

From Nicola -

The time for our mid year dinner has been changed from 7:30 to 6:30 (by consensus, hooray!), and I thought I'd better remind everyone coming that it's the Indian Spice restaurant at 11 North Rd, in North East Valley, not one of the other 3 in Dunedin.

Iceskating holiday course

From Nicola:

Here is some information about iceskating holiday sessions - one hour a day, for 5 days. My children have really enjoyed these courses, and it's a great way to gain confidence quickly.

Kiwiskate at Dunedin Ice Stadium

Activities list

Thanks to those who sent suggestions of activities that others may be interested in. The list is small at the moment, but if anyone wants to add anything, email Nicola and she'll add it for the next list.

To make sure that contact details that are private don't get shared online I suggest contacting the person who suggested the activity to find out more. If the activity has a website or dedicated email, though, then I'll add that here.

From Stacey:
  • Swimming with SHEAF on Mondays
  • Highland Dancing, approx 45 min class. I think there's also a beginner's Chance to Dance class run by someone, but I don't know the contact details for that. I could get them, though, if anyone wants them.
  • Pippins (junior brownies) - contact girl guides for local group http://www.girlguidingnz.org.nz/
From Kathrin:
From Donna:
  • Hayley does Diving and if any other children were interested you could email me and I will forward their expression of interest to her coach. Becky, her coach is keen to run a few sessions on "how to dive" if anyone is keen. Donna is new to the SHEAF list (i.e. won't be on the list sent out at the start of the year), so for her contact details please email Kathrin or Nicola, or check your newsletter.

Mid-winter bonfire - new date!

It was a bit rainy for many of us on Sunday, so Annemieke has very kindly suggested that we try again on Sunday 4 July. All the same details apply - meet at 3pm, on the beach at the end of Edinburgh St, near the lagoon. Bring anything you'd like to roast on the bonfire (preferably edible)!

Maori Language Course - for Adults

To see the pdf file that Shari mentions, you'll need to ask Nicola to send it to you. I've had a hunt on the Te Wananga o Aotearoa website, but can't see any info about this particular course there.

From Shari:

Kia Ora friends,

If you are interested or know someone who is interested in learning the maori language please see the attached. It is an excellent course because of it's unique learning environment and best of all it is FREE!! Only adults are able to apply. I have completed 3 years with a diploma level in Maori and I thoroughly recommend this course to all. You will meet interesting people in your community who will become like family as you journey in learning the language together. Most of all this course is FUN! This a fantastic opportunity for you!!

Na,
Shari

Congratulations Corner! - diving competition, canine trials, irish dancing!

It would be excellent if we could make this a regular section so don't forget to send Nicola anything you'd like included, any time. Three great pieces of news this week:

1)Congratulations to Hayley!
We are very proud parents of Hayley (8yrs) as she competed in her very first competitive diving competition in Christchurch last weekend (Queen's Birthday). Hayley received a gold medal for coming first in the 1 metre events for her age (under 11yrs) and 5th in the 3 metre event. She did very well, even if we had to use some rescue remedy for nerves!! We are new to home schooling, but are loving it so far and are now into our 4th week.

Donna and Gary
2) Congratulations to Emily and Patch!
Congratulations to Emily C and her dog Patch, who competed in the Taieri Canine Training Club's Ribbon Trial this weekend.
3) Congratulations to Liam!
Congratulations to Liam, who performed Irish Dancing in front of a sell-out crowd at the Regent Theatre, for the "Regent Variety Concert" on the evening of Saturday 12 June.

Observatory trip update

Our observatory trip on Sunday 18 July will be held at 6:30am, so that we can be sure to have enough time before the sun rises. We'll set a raindate soon, just in case.

If the trip is postponed, I'll email everyone who has booked by 5:30am that morning - I don't think I can handle the phone (or speaking at all) that early in the morning. I'm also happy to send out a group text if we need to postpone, so email me your mobile number if you'd prefer that method.

And make sure you've booked if you want to come - I'd hate for anyone to turn up to the observatory so early and find it had been cancelled!

Midwinter dinner update

There have been a few requests to make our mid-year dinner on Wednesday 30 June a bit earlier, so it may be changed to 6:30 (from 7:30). Will keep everyone who's booked updated.

If you'd like to come, but haven't let Nicola know yet, please do ASAP so that she can keep you informed :-)

Weekend Reading - Books should be free

Okay - not exactly weekend reading, but a great resource for anyone looking for Audiobooks

Books Should Be Free

Is a treasure house of free audiobook downloads - including favourites such as Beowulf, A Little Princess, Tom Sawyer, Doctor Doolittle... and tons more.

The files can be downloaded in mp3, iPod and iTunes formats. (Just be aware that there's a big google ad in the middle of the page taking you to a site that has not free books for download :~) )

Article: "Welfare cuts will hit homeschoolers"

Thanks to Kathrin for this link regarding National's changes to benefits and how they may affect our single parents:

Otago Museum workshops

The "Feel the Force" workshop mentioned in last week's newsletter will be on at 2:30 - 4:00pm,Wednesday 18 August. Please let Nicola know if you'd like to book spaces.

Congratulations Corner - otago homeschool team wins chess tournament!

Kathrin has made this lovely suggestion: "it would be nice to have a section in the newsletter congratulating children for any awards or achievements they might get. Like a wall of fame or something, even just for "Player of the Day" at football, or completing dance exams, or whatever."
This is an excellent idea, so if anyone has anything they'd like to share, please email Nicola any time and she'll include it in the next newsletter - it can be anything at all that you or your children are proud of and want to share.

In this vein, read on for our first congratulations to Leighton, Palin, Miro and Aster on winning the Otago/Southland Interschool Teams Championship (Intermediate) chess tournament!

From Annemieke:
I would like to share this great news with the home school group. Yesterday there was the yearly Otago chess tournament. All schools in Otago could enter, and I had entered a home school team. Our team consisted of, Leighton, 12, Palin, 11, Miro, 10 and Aster, 8. As we had two children of intermediate age, we had to play against the intermediate teams. There were 24 teams all up, including 11 primary age teams.
As the day went on, it became clear that the home school group was doing very well, even Aster won a game and the three boys won many games each. And guess who was the winning group at the end of the day?? Yes, our home school group!!!
We are all very happy about that!! We went home with some money, and we are allowed to play in the National chess tournament in Christchurch this year.
Just had to share that with you...
A proud mother,
Annemieke

Mid-winter Bonfire

From Annemieke:

I am preparing a mid winter fire at Waikouaiti beach on Sunday 20 June. We will light it at 3 pm and we will watch the dark set in.
I would like to invite the home school group to join us!
You can bring anything to roast or toast in the fire. And the children can have a great time at the beach here, there are rocks and rock pools to explore. We will be at the beach at the end of Edinburgh Street, where the lagoon is..
This will go ahead only if it is not raining .
Cheers,
Annemieke

Edited to add: It was a bit rainy for many of us today, so Annemieke has very kindly suggested that we try again on Sunday 4 July. All the same details apply - meet at 3pm, on the beach at the end of Edinburgh St, near the lagoon. Bring anything you'd like to roast on the bonfire (preferably edible)!

Weekend Reading - Rockpool Homeschool

For those of you who like hanging around in internet forums, or who don't get to many physical meetings with other homeschoolers, or who are just looking for more information/support/ideas etc, I can highly recommend the Rockpool!

Started a few years ago by an ex-kiwi who had moved to Melbourne, the Rockpool is an online community of home educators who chat about all sorts of things - usually, but not always home ed related. I (Stacey) am quite often there, and have found it to be a really useful way to ask questions and get feedback about different ideas and resources. The nature of internet forums means that a bunch of people can give their opinions etc without all needing to be in the same room at the same time. Most of the members are Australian, and particularly, Victorians, but the forum is aimed at all Australasians and open to everyone.

You do need to register in order to post, but (I think) you can lurk without registering to see if it's your cup of tea

Check it out at http://www.rockpoolhomeschool.com/

Otago Museum workshops - Term 3

Nicola's in the process of booking our museum workshops for Term 3, and the first one will be the Survival Factor workshop, 1pm - 2:30pm Wednesday 21 July.

The museum's blurb says: "Within our innovative new 'Survival Factor' exhibition, students face challenges as they explore their bodies' physiological and psychological responses in situations ranging from 'High Alert' to 'Deep Sleep'. A visit become an adventure as they experience the problem solving instincts of their bodies. Levels 1- 5". As always, the cost is $3 per child and there are limited spaces, so if you're interested, email Nicola to book.

In August, we'll be doing a brand new workshop called Feel the Force. From the museum's education co-ordinator: "We explore Work and Motion through a series of activities using force-related machines. The programme begins with the operation of a real catapult (well it’s actually an authentic styled mangonel, currently being built by skilled carpenter man) which I am really looking forward to. The idea is that if it is nice enough outside (hrm, unlike today) then we will be testing different loads and tensions of the mangonel to achieve Work using Force." Dates and details to come.

Edited to add: Feel the Force will be will be on at 2:30 - 4:00pm,Wednesday 18 August.

Dentist visits for 12 - 18 year olds

Nicola has had an email this week from Sharleen Szavay, the Adolescent Oral Health Co-ordinator for Public Health South, to ensure that our families know that 12 - 18 year olds are still entitled to free basic dental care. After Year 8, they are no longer part of the School Dental Service and need to enrol with a dentist.

Sharleen is sending Nicola a list of providers and enrolment forms, so if you have a child in this age group, let her know and she'll get the information to you. Otherwise, you can call Sharleen on 476 9834 or 0800 TALK TEETH.

Matariki Observatory trip

From Nicola:

The date for the observatory trip has been tentatively set for Sunday 18 July, as we see the Matariki constellation quite a bit later down here than in the North Island. I'm waiting to hear back about the time, but it should definitely be early enough that people with Sunday commitments should still be able to get to them (i.e. probably about 6am). I hope this suits everyone who has let me know that they're interested. Also, the cost will be the same as for the regular observatory hours - $3 per child, $5 per adult.

Edited to add: trip now confirmed for 6.30am, 18 July. Trip will continue, rain or shine!

Location: Beverley Begg Observatory - on the far side of Robin Hood Park. Cnr City Rd and Ross St. Park on Ross St and walk across the park. Some clever soul gave us a tip to wear gumboots - the park can be muddy on a dewy winter's morning/evening.

Note: there are no toilets at or near the Observatory (!)

Activities List

As we're coming up to a new term, and we always have new families joining, Nicola thought it might be interesting to compile a list of activities/lessons that our kids do that might inspire others if they're looking for something. Please email her just a few details for each activity, such as cost, contact number or any other relevant details, and she'll put these together and add them to next week's newsletter.

Weekend Reading - The Art of Math

Prepare yourselves - this is a long one, but well worth the read!

Paul Lockart looks at the vast chasm between what Mathematics is, and how it is taught - and laments that the teaching of mathematics seems to go out of its way to obscure its beauty and simplicity.

A Mathematician’s Lament by Paul Lockhart

"...The first thing to understand is that mathematics is an art. The difference between math and the other arts, such as music and painting, is that our culture does not recognize it as such...

"Part of the problem is that nobody has the faintest idea what it is that mathematicians do... Nevertheless, the fact is that there is nothing as dreamy and poetic, nothing as radical, subversive, and psychedelic, as mathematics..."

Art classes

A few of our members have contacted Studio2 regarding art classes to start next term.

From Julie S:

I went and had a look at the studio2 art class last week, the lady seemed nice, the facility looked like 5 children for a class would probably be best size. They would like us to book a session at $50 and divide that by the children booked to attend, they would prefer a weekly slot, though would consider fortnightly if we could get 2 groups going and alternating weeks. They are reasonably flexible on days and times, during or after school depending on what families wanted. I am thinking about sending my 3 on a monday from 1-3 or 1;30-3;30pm if I can find 2-3 others that this time suited that were keen. I am flexible on weekly or fortnightly depending on interest and would like to start next term. Do you know if anyone might be interested? If families wanted to organise a group they would be happy to accommodate them.
Phone Bridget Inder on 474 5949

Mid-year dinner 2010

The most popular date for the mid-winter dinner at Indian Spice is 7:30pm, Wednesday 30 June, so that's decided! If you'd like to come, please email Nicola this week so that she can book a table that will fit us all in.

Edited to add: Time is now either 6.30 or 7.30pm - if you let Nicola know you're coming, she will make sure you know what time :)

Kathrin's Fruit Co-op

From Kathrin:

I am looking at starting a fruit buying co-op, mostly buying Organic fruit, and thought you might be interested. I am happy to buy the fruit, let you know what is available, and weigh and bag it, ready for you to pick up. Please let me know if you don't want to receive further emails about this, or if you know anyone else who would be interested.

This week I have:
Organic Mandarins @ $5.20kg
Bio-grow Kiwifruit @$3.30kg
Organic feijoas @$4.70kg
Bio-grow Royal Gala apples @$2.80kg.

Please email me with quantities required, and when you can pick it up. You can pay by cash, or I can give you my bank account details if you want to do a direct deposit.

Next week I hope to have organic apples and feijoas, as well as more mandarins. I'd love to hear of other suppliers if you know of any.

Kind regards
Kathrin
